Vibrant tenor Al-Jabril Muhammad, a New Jersey native, started his journey in music at the young age of 10 years old. He studied with a wide range of teachers learning a variety of instruments including piano, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and voice. Known for his rich tone and ability to fill a room with his voice, Muhammad brings uniqueness to opera.
As an instrumentalist, he toured the country performing in several productions. Since he began studying voice in 2015, he has won and been a finalist in several different voice competitions, including NJNATS in 2016 and 2017 and Opera Ebony in 2017.
Muhammad possesses a passion for composing and programming music. He has composed for many different mediums such as woodwind ensemble, concert band, brass band, pitched percussion, percussion ensembles, as well as suites for piano and voice. Al-Jabril is constantly broadening his horizons as a musician and composer. He has successfully programmed and performed multiple solo voice recitals. His unique taste and enjoyment of programming can be attributed to his diverse and eclectic musical palette. Muhammad attributes his unique sound and composing style to his diverse daily musical diet as well as his studies in West African culture and music.
Though very capable in traditional opera and aria repertoire, Muhammad truly enjoys performing spirituals and art songs. His love for spirituals is deeply rooted in the struggles of his ancestors as well as his ancestral awareness. He also enjoys performing the art songs of living and contemporary composers.
Muhammad received his Bachelors of Arts in Music from New Jersey City University, where he studied with Bass-Baritone John Hancock. He received his Master of Music in Classical Voice Performance degree from Montclair State University where he studied with Countertenor Jeffrey Gall.
